Breast Cancer Break-a-thon Registration

From our Sister Felicia Hodges:

I realize it’s happening on Halloween, but if you have young children or need to prepare for the wave of trick-or-treaters that will be coming to your door, you can break a few boards – or make a generous donation and be on the road long before dark…

The event is a fund-raiser for Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., a Dutchess County non-profit organization that provides non-medical support services for area women battling breast cancer. Although my active battle with the disease is five years behind me, I remember the difficulty of coordinating daily radiation therapy around a busy work schedule, after-school activities for my then grade-schooler and regular home/life stuff – and it wasn’t easy. For women affected by breast cancer who need a sitter so they won’t miss a doctor’s appointment or need someone to grocery shop for them because they’ve just had surgery, Miles of Hope is a very valuable and much needed resource. I hope you and your students can come out and support the cause while getting in a little tameshiwara training in the process!

It works like a walk-a-thon:
get sponsors to give a specific amount for each board you break (or give a flat donation).
Next, show up on the 10/31, pay a $10 registration fee and break as many boards as you can/want/sponsors’ wallets will allow. Everything we take in will go to Miles of Hope.

For those of you in Westchester, Sensei Erica DelDuca will be hosting a smaller version of the event at the Sanchin Dojo (click here for directions) in Bronxville at the same time. Have I convinced you yet to come on out and support a great cause?

Feel free to contact me with questions or if you need directions or more info.

Even if you can’t make the Break-a-Thon (Newburgh OR Bronxville venues), please consider sending along a donation to this very worthy cause.

Checks are made to “Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation”.

Super Summer Seminar 2009

Here is the first exciting news for 2009! We have secured a new and improved home for SSS. The 09 Camp will be held at Herkimer County Community College. This will be the fifth home of SSS over its 27 year existence. Don’t let the name fool you… HCCC facilities are first class and will provide SSS with numerous improvements and advantages, here’s a partial list:

1. Easy driving and airport access – campus is an hour’s drive from both Syracuse and Albany airports, and 3 minutes from NYS Thruway exit 30 (Herkimer).

2. We are the only camp present on campus.

3. Plenty of parking near dorms, training facilities and dining hall.

4. No big hills or long walks (because of plentiful parking you can drive from dorm to dining etc. for those with injuries)

5. Excellent training facilities and meeting rooms

6. Fitness center, pool, and track.

7. Plenty of outdoor areas for training and outdoor classes.

8. Air conditioned 500 seat auditorium for Friday’s “Meet n’ Greet” and for Saturday’s Demo’s and awards

9. New modern dorms that include:

a. Air Conditioning in most dorms

b. Full Kitchen

c. Full Laundry in most dorms

d. Living Rooms in each unit

e. Additional common areas on each floor for socializing

f. Free High Speed internet in each bedroom and living room (you will need a cat5 cable to hook up)

g. Free Cable TV hook up in each unit (you would have to bring a TV or cable capable laptop)

h. Free Cable TV’s in most common areas

i. 2 private bathrooms in each unit (each shared by no more than 4 attendees)

j. Each unit can house up to eight, making house groups together much easier, making SSS even more fun than ever.

All other aspects of SSS that make it special for all of us remain the same:

1. Our first class staff

2. Excellent balance of class offerings

3. Saturday Demos

4. Saturday entertainment with our DJ

5. Legendary comradery.

6. Huge value in Martial Arts training

Dana and I carefully researched and considered every aspect SSS to ensure a seamless positive change that will provide everyone with an even better SSS experience. We also sought out the advise of several senior staff and of course Mr. Campos. Here is what he had to say about the improved facilities:

Greetings.

When we established Super Summers in 1983, it was held at the Lake Placid Club (Lake Placid, NY). The next year we moved to Paul Smith’s College near Saranac Lake. We were there for two years and moved to Cazenovia College (Cazenovia, NY) because it was centrally located. In 1996 we relocated the camp to Colgate University. Colgate has been a great location but, like all of our other venues, it had positives and negatives. We were lucky – we had Bob Pinney at Colgate to smooth out any bumps in the road for twelve years.

Tom and Dana Arcuri, as the current camp directors, have decided to move Super Summers once more. Any time you make a big change it is difficult but, after talking to them and and visiting the campus, I understand and agree that this is an appropriate move.

The new venue at Herkimer Community College has a lot of positives – no hills to climb, training venues that are centrally located, new air-conditioned dorms, no driving necessary, tons of parking, no other camps in session, and it is located right off the NYS Thruway. The biggest positive for them is the college is located in their home town which has several advantages.

I had a conversation recently with a long-time SSS instructor and he noted how seamlessly the change to Tom & Dana as new camp directors appeared. That seamless transition is a tribute to their organizational and decision-making skills. I am sure this latest decision will prove to be a good choice for everyone. I look forward to being at the 27th Annual Super Summers with all of you this July!

Respectfully, M. Campos

So there you have it, the first big news for 09. We are currently pursuing our special guest instructors and that will be the next big update!

The website is being updated constantly with new information including testimonials and photos from 08 so check it out when you get a chance.

Krav-Maga Seminar

Greetings friends and fellow martial artists:

I would like to formally invite you to a seminar that my instructor and I are offering.
This will take place on Sunday March 29th at the Unionvale Dojo at 11:00am.
This is considerd to be a NEMAC workout so the cost is going to be very low–$0.00. This is a seminar covering the highly explosive art of Israeli Krav-Maga (translated it means contact combat). I have had the fortune to train in this art for the past year or so. I have met an extraordinary instructor named Davide Gristina and have been training with him ever since. He is a dynamic instructor who teaches Krav Maga self defense for both civillians as well as law enforcement. I will be his personal punching bag (assistant) for the seminar. It will include the basics from the Krav Maga curriculum. There is nothing that he will teach that you have not seen before, however the intent and delivery is very different and unique. This is open to ALL ranks and styles. Krav maga is a complimentary system and everyone can benefit from the techniques and concepts that will be taught. I want to thank Sensei’s Tom Maloney and Joseph Rinaldi of the Unionvale Dojo for allowing us to use their fine facility. I also want to thank Sensei Grag Sullivan (NEMAC President) for having NEMAC offer this. Please extend this invitation to anyone you know that would like to further their martial arts education. I hope you will support my instructor and I on this date.
Thank you..
Onagashimasu……..
